Patient spotlight: Lucille's story

The BIG Pink Bus has been in operation since 2024 and is already saving lives of women in our community, like Lucille, who moved to Arizona from Minnesota after retiring to be closer to her daughter and two grandchildren. During an appointment at the Banner Health Clinic in Queen Creek, Lucille’s doctor said she should get a mammogram and showed Lucille a brochure for The BIG Pink Bus.

“I called the number to make an appointment,” Lucille says. “I told them where I lived – San Tan Valley – and they told me when The BIG Pink Bus would be nearby. Actually, it was stationed in the parking lot of the Banner Clinic, which was so convenient for me. I was able to make an appointment in just that one phone call.”

After the mammogram, Lucille’s results were sent to her doctor and she was eventually diagnosed with a type of breast cancer known as invasive lobular carcinoma. Surgery to remove the cyst at Banner Gateway Medical Center was followed by five days of radiation treatment at Banner MD Anderson. Her last radiation treatment was on August 12, 2025, and now, the cancer is in remission and no additional treatment is needed.

“Everything was just so nice. Surgery and radiation in the same area. And, it felt like family. It was awesome,” she says. “It was all because of the Pink Bus, where I started.” Lucille is feeling great, she says, and back to her loving duties of picking up her grandchildren from school and being there for her family. She is also very grateful for The BIG Pink Bus – for being available, convenient and detecting her cancer early so that she can fully enjoy this next chapter of her life.

Over the past 26 years, the Care Card has become Arizona’s largest retail fundraiser, generating over $4 million for local charities supporting health care for women, children, and the elderly. The Care Card’s 20% discount is a great incentive to try new restaurants, do your holiday shopping early, splurge on some self-care, or treat a friend—and it offers the added benefit of knowing you’re potentially saving the lives of your friends, mothers, daughters, and neighbors.
