American Cancer Society helping Banner patients undergoing cancer treatment

American Cancer Society (ACS)
provides crucial funding for cancer
patients in need.
The cost of transportation and lodging is concerning for many patients and families who travel from outside the Valley to receive cancer care at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center. In some cases, these financial and logistical challenges are a barrier to receiving necessary care or adhering to medical protocols. Fortunately, American Cancer Society (ACS) provides crucial funding for cancer patients in need.
Transportation: Over the past two years, ACS has awarded Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center $25,000 in Transportation Grants. These funds provide gas cards, ride shares, bus or cab fares, and wheelchair van transportation. A total of 77 patients have received transportation support for 1,609 rides to date, thanks to the ACS Transportation Grants. A breast cancer patient who drives from Nevada to Banner MD Anderson’s main campus in Gilbert for treatment recently expressed to her care team the enormous relief the gas cards have provided for her and her husband, alleviating some of strain they’re facing due to her diagnosis.
Lodging: The American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in Phoenix formerly provided no- or low-cost temporary housing for out-of-town patients undergoing cancer treatment. The pandemic required ACS to close the facility, but the team mobilized to ensure that they could still support patients in need. Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Home Away from Home program is the grateful beneficiary of a $75,000 Lodging Grant from ACS, which covers hotel stays for qualifying patients. To date, 94 patients have received lodging support thanks to the ACS Lodging Grant.
