Banner Hospice Music Therapy.

Music therapy is an evidence-based discipline that benefits patients with a wide range of conditions in all stages of life. Through activities such as lyric analysis, songwriting, playing, listening, or recall, music therapists work with patients to provide skilled, personalized care.

The Power of Music

In hospice settings, music therapy helps patients cope with their illness, decreases pain and stress, and provides a supportive tool for families and friends. For those with dementia and other cognitive disorders, music therapy has been shown to help improve focus and reduce anxiety.

Banner Health’s President & CEO, Peter S. Fine, and his wife, Rebecca Ailes-Fine, have recently established the Fine Family Matching Challenge through the Banner Health Foundation.

The Fines will match donor gifts 50 cents on the dollar to build a $1.5 million endowment that will support and sustain Banner Hospice’s Music Therapy program in perpetuity.

“As a society, we place a great deal of emphasis on the early stages of life,” said Mr. Fine. “Rebecca and I believe it’s also important to demonstrate respect, compassion and dignity for patients and their families towards the end of life. We believe Banner Hospice and its Music Therapy Program bring to life James Taylor’s lyric, ‘The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time.’
