Imagine your retirement: Enjoying precious free time after decades of hard work, diligently saving money, making travel plans. Now, picture an alternate experience happening to individuals in our own community: Receiving a cancer diagnosis, realizing that even the best health insurance policies don’t fully cover treatments, and watching the depletion of a life savings to battle the disease.
Life savings drained by cancer
Within months of each other, both Margaret and Larry* received a cancer diagnosis. Even with careful planning during their entire married lives, the couple wasn’t prepared for the financial burden of their cancer journey. Neither expected to ever have to ask for help, but last year, they both did.
Through the generosity of donors to the Patient Assistance Fund at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, the couple had somewhere to turn. They applied for and received much needed—and greatly appreciated—financial assistance with the cost of their radiation therapy.
Patient Assistance Fund relies on philanthropy
The Patient Assistance Fund helps customers with financial need cover the cost of diagnostic imaging, radiation treatment, and even purchasing a wig. Donations provide a lifeline to those going through the biggest challenge of their lives, bringing hope and help. In 2017 alone, 76 customers received assistance, for a remarkable total of $205,000.
