Thanks to nearly $520,000 raised through the Banner Health Foundation in partnership with donors, board members, community leaders, physicians, patients and families, The BIG Outside is now open at Banner Children’s at Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa. This brand new outdoor play space and healing garden for patients and families is designed to offer activities to help children keep their minds off treatment or receive rehabilitation therapy outdoors. Features include mini golf, a basketball court, an amphitheater for kids’ programs, and a bereavement garden. Also included is The Little Library, where books and magazines for children of all ages are available to borrow or keep.

Former patient Austin Overton, age 8, of Gilbert said the play space is exciting for kids like himself. “When I heard the term ‘mini golf,’ I was like, ‘Oh, snap! This is going to be good,” Austin said.

Young patients can receive rehabilitation therapy or simply enjoy some fresh air and sunshine, and parents can reflect and recharge in the healing garden. Siblings have an upbeat place to spend time with their brothers and sisters, who are hospitalized or receiving treatment.

Special thanks to Keith Galbut, Banner Health Foundation Board member, for serving as chairman of The BIG Outside fundraising committee. Thank you to committee members Drew Aquilina, Julie Bezzant, Chip Carmer, Charity Carr, Lee O’Connell, Logan Scow, Bill Smith and Rachel Turley.
