In-patient cardiac rehabilitation center opens

Doors opened on the new In-Patient Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix in late October. This unique rehabilitation center offers an innovative approach to wellness and care, better preparing heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support candidates for a successful surgery while empowering them to improve their health during recovery.

Patients admitted to the hospital will work with clinical exercise physiologists before and after surgery to improve cardio-pulmonary function, increase strength, and improve flexibility and mobility—methods proven to lead to better outcomes for heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support patients.

The cardiac rehab team, in conjunction with the Advanced Heart Failure team, have collaborated under the guidance of Radha Gopalan, MD, to provide this innovative center for patients. This unique project is supported by philanthropic gifts to the Banner Health Foundation’s At the Heart of Health Fund in honor of Dr. Gopalan. The fund supports the implementation of Dr. Gopalan’s vision to self-empower individuals to build well-being to combat illness, aid in recovery, and experience optimum health every day.

Funding for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center was provided, in part, by a generous gift from Robert Kiyosaki, businessman, entrepreneur, and author of the “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” book series. The gift was made in honor of his parents and in-laws.
