Your Own Medical Think Tank
On May 13, 2021, Banner Health Foundation presented an online presentation and discussion featuring a panel of Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center experts including Madappa Kundranda, MD, Chief, Section of Medical Oncology & Director, GI Cancer Program; Michael Choti, MD, Division Chief of Surgical Oncology; Gary Walker, MD, Radiation Oncology Section Chief; John Chang, MD, Medical Director of Body Imaging.
During the program, participants were provided a behind-the-scenes look at how individual cancer cases are evaluated by a multi-disciplinary team at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Three unique gastrointestinal cancer cases were presented: A stage IV colon cancer patient, a young rectal cancer patient, and a pancreatic cancer patient. Not only did each case differ medically, the specialists around the table differed. While a nutritionist was needed to consult on one case, a geneticist was at the table for another; a pathologist provided expert analysis in one case and a nurse navigator provided input for another. While just snapshots, these tumor board discussions exhibited the way that teams of specialists from various disciplines come together at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center to discuss a patient’s care plan, from diagnosis through survivorship.
