At age 16, Alex Palacios already faced more adversity than many do in a lifetime. Her mental health battle began in early childhood, with years spent in and out of therapy that never made a lasting difference.

Things took a turn for the worse when Alex’s family lost their home. Suddenly, they found themselves living in an extended-stay hotel with no car, no privacy, and nowhere to call home. The instability took a toll on Alex’s mental health.

Recognizing her declining well-being, Alex took a courageous step—telling her mom she needed more help. She was soon admitted to an in-patient behavioral health hospital for a week where the family first heard about Banner’s Teen Substance Abuse & Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program, located at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center. Funded partially by a generous grant from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health to the Banner Health Foundation, the program gives teens ages 13 to 17 intensive outpatient care focused on professional and peer support as well as education on healthy behaviors.

Alex began the program last June, hesitant but determined. Despite having no transportation, her mother made it a priority to get her to every session and attended nearly every family night. The persistence paid off; Alex graduated from the program and is now thriving.

Program counselor Jennifer Keiser, LMSW, played a pivotal role in her recovery. Known for building deep trust with her patients, Jennifer made a lasting impact on Alex and her family. She explains, “Most of the adolescents start out not wanting to come to group. Halfway through, they talk about how much better they feel coming to group, and at the end, most don’t want to leave due to the support they find from their peers.”

Today, Alex is working to earn a GED and dreams of becoming a cosmetologist. She says her life has turned around, and credits much of that to the support she received from Jennifer and the team at Banner.

Alex’s story was featured recently on a local Phoenix TV newscast and stands as a powerful reminder of the impact of accessible, compassionate mental health care.
