Help give cancer patients the comforts of home

A group of committed community leaders has joined the Banner Health Foundation to offset the cost of safe, clean, local lodging for cancer patients who travel to Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center for treatment. The Home Away from Home campaign is building a permanent endowment to provide enduring support to assist patients who live beyond a safe distance from the Cancer Center.

Held annually the Saturday before Thanksgiving and sponsored by Banner - University Medicine, El Tour de Tucson is a fundraising adventure bike ride attracting over 6,000 cyclists of all ages and abilities from throughout the United States and worldwide. Participants include beginners, intermediate, advanced, and professional cyclists riding 100% human-powered bicycles.

Banner clinician-researchers continue to be at the forefront of the national effort to offer the latest treatments and therapies to patients facing cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s disease. Alireza Atri, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Banner Sun Health Research Institute, has been a leading force seeking answers and clarity in the wake of the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the first drug for Alzheimer’s disease in 18 years.

Can brain training done on the computer help prevent Alzheimer’s disease? Banner Alzheimer’s Institute locations in Phoenix and Tucson are participating in a new study exploring this possibility. The Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training (PACT) study will investigate whether computerized brain training, sometimes called brain games, can reduce the risk of dementia.
