Banner scientists research link between COVID-19 and the brain

Since news broke early last year that some 36 percent of COVID-19 patients in Wuhan hospitals were developing impaired consciousness, seizures, sensory impairments, and other neurological symptoms, dedicated clinics have been established to study this subset of patients. The Brain and Body Donation Program at Banner Sun Health Research Institute pivoted quickly to study how COVID-19 invades the brain. They immediately made their data available to the international research community to add to the body of knowledge about the virus.

Arizona researchers receive $27.5 million NIH grant

Banner Alzheimer’s Institute received funding for a new study of people at six levels of genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The grant from the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health, is expected to total $27.5 million over five years. Led by researchers from Banner and Mayo Clinic in Arizona, the study will investigate biological and cognitive changes that happen before the onset of memory and thinking problems in people at different levels of genetic risk.
