Arizona Attorney General’s Office awards Banner $1.2 million to fight opioid crisis

The Banner Health Foundation was recently awarded more than $1 million in grant funds from the office of the Arizona Attorney General to support two Banner Health programs aimed at combatting the opioid crisis in Arizona.

With an expected 13 million Americans projected to develop Alzheimer’s disease by 2050, the disease threatens to overwhelm the health care system, families, and caregivers. Yet only one new therapy drug, aducanumab, has been approved in the last 20 years. Discovering new treatments will require making it easier for more people from diverse backgrounds who are willing and qualified to participate in clinical trials.

In line with the recruitment strategies recommended by the expert panel, Banner Sun Health Research Institute and Banner Alzheimer’s Institute are working to increase diversity in Alzheimer’s research. They recently received generous funding from the Arizona Community Foundation, Arthea China, Copperpoint, Acadia Pharmaceuticals, and individual donors to fund a webinar series called REAL TALK.

Dr. Jessica Langbaum is the co-director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative, a collaborative program led by Banner Alzheimer’s Institute. In her 15 years at BAI, she has focused her considerable talents on brain research—more specifically, searching for a way to prevent Alzheimer’s disease before symptoms appear.
